What to do with old iPhone ...

I have a first generation iPhone that is no longer associated with my number. I want to upgrade the software and put some tunes and apps on it.

When doing an upgrade or restore at the end it activates the phone. If I do that is it going to mess up my new phone?

"Scattered" Podcasts ...

I podcast different radio shows and then listen to them at a later date via my iPhone. Upon downloading iTunes 9, my podcasts on my phone have "shuffled." They used to stay in order of broadcast by hour and by day, but now are in no comprehensible order. They are in the correct order in my iTunes. The phone showed a message about how it was organizing my music and I needed to wait...and then they were no longer in order.

I tried deselecting the podcast, syncing the phone and thus deleting them off the phone. I reselected the podcast, synced the phone...and same problem.

Ideas to get them back in order?

Some Smart Playlists don't work on ...

Hello,

I have a 16 gig 3G that has been working pretty well. Since 3.0 (I think) it sometimes decides to skip multiple songs in a play list. If I try to go back to the real next song, it just skips to where it was. If I exit the playlist or iPod mode and go back all is fine, it isn't too big a deal.

After I did the iTunes 9 and iPhone 3.1 upgrade, I have a smart play list that will not keep the right order when it goes to the phone. It is doing this for 2 of the 5 smart play lists I have on the phone. I have restored the phone. I have deleted the play lists from my computer and re-made them and it still does it. In fact the play lists are set to be random, yet when they transfere to the phone they go to a specific order that stays the same even when the play list has been deleted and re-made.

Any thoughts?

Multiple display of the CD cover with ...

I have my iPhone 3Gs since one month.
After the presentation of the new OS 3.1 unfortunately updated to it.

Since then the album view shows for each Song in a compilation the Cd Cover.
I googled for a solution but couldn't find One.

I tried also to use the compilation flag.
I tried to make a Full reset.

No Change.

The same happens also on my iPod Touch 2G.

Does anybody have the Same Problem or

Album repeated ...

Hi,

After 3.1 update, all albums I have on my iPhone 3G are repeated on the albums list and I only added one time. I tried to restart the iPhone 3G and reSync with iTunes but the problem remains.

Anyone had the same problem?

Brand new iPhone, but loading songs ...

Hi All

I finally drank the Kool Aid and got a 3GS 16gb two days ago. i like the phone, getting used to it. I made sure to get the latest iTunes 9 and the latest software update (3.1?)

Syncing my contacts, calendar and mail could not have been easier! I was very relieved when it all went in trouble-free.

Here's the problem i'm having...

When I try to import songs from my computer (PC w/XP) onto the phone via iTunes it's unacceptably slow - one song can take up to 5 minutes...and that's if it doesn't lock up iTunes completely. After a few minutes when i Ctrl Alt del, it tells me itunes is 'not responding'. If i end the program and start up again, i get back in - sometimes the songs i was trying to load are on there, sometimes they aren't.

I've had quite a few iPods hooked up to this computer and have never had this problem - it's only with the iPhone (or i guess it could be itunes 9).

I turned off the 'autofill' feature - i was thinking that might be the problem, but it hasn't changed anything.

I'm sorry I'm not a 'mac' guy. been doing PC forever and a day and this old dog knows too many PC tricks to start something new. please don't answer me with 'get a mac'. it's not helpful.

I will plant a solid kiss on the lips of anybody who can fix this problem.

ok heres the problem

I have 2 computers authorized with my iphone, 1 is a laptop, and the other is general PC. the problem is, i have about 120gb of music on my general PC, but only a few on my laptop.
i have created 2 playlists off my general PC and put them onto my iphone, but now i want to add one song off my laptop onto my iphone without erasing the 2 playlists i have already got on the iphone.

is there anyway to do this?

Alphabetical scroll bar not working in ...

Hi, when i click on artists in the iphone ipod, i like to use the alphabetical scroll option on the right hand side as i have many artists stored on my iphone. However, this alphabetical is no longer working since i installed the latest iphone software upgrade last night. Clicking on a letter is very handy rather than scrolling through all the artists. Also, i notice that there is only 1 horizontal bar for artists beginning with 'A' and nothing for any other letters in the alphabet

Any ideas? thanks

Hi there. Ive read every google thing and most of the forum entries i can find about this, but to no avail. When I sync the iPhone; duplicate albums show up some with art and some without, and songs are in the wrong order (which is really annoying for my gapless albums). All the album art is on iTunes on the computer, but even if I make sure all the info is right, it will send one or two songs from an album into a different one without art.

Ive tried making them into compilations, syncing and resyncing, checking and unchecking. Nothing. Getting really frustrated here.

Someone please help!!

From all my searches, all I can find is to go to playlists, choose on the go, choose edit, and then scroll alphabetically through 10 thousand plus songs????? There isn't even a search feature?!

I feel like I must be missing something, but I don't think I can...

It's so easy on an ipod... just hold the button down....

Iphone can do genius, and it HAS on the go playlists- but why are they so hard to make?

New apple lossless files wrong length ...

This just started happening in the last week. Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard and to the latest iPhone OS, these are likely culprits. Here's what's happening. After creating a song with Logic 8, I bounce to Apple lossless, aif and mp3. All three formats have no problem playing in iTunes 9 an they all show the correct time (e.g. 1:58). However, when I play these on my iPhone. The aif and mp3 files use the correct total time but the Apple Lossless file indicates much longer (e.g., 2:25:08) and just "plays" silence after 1:58). Older apple lossless files created in the same way still use the correct time. Is anyone else seeing this?

Too many redirects downloading podcasts ...

In the list of podcasts there is a 'get more episodes ..'-link. I am transferred to phobos.apple.com, but get the error 'Could not open page because too many redirects occurred (OK)'. Rebooting the phone and clearing the cache have not worked. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I just discovered after the latest iPhone update that when a video ends, I'm no longer taken back to the Videos menu; instead, the next video on my iPhone immediately starts playing. Is there any way to disable this so that I'm taken back to the Videos menu? I couldn't find any setting for it.

Up until yesterday I would play a song and at the TOP of the screen would be the genius symbol. I clicked on this symbol and it would create a NEW Playlist that I could save.

iphone 3GS - sound out and video out ...

Hi there,

Having read numerous posts on this site, it appears this is a fairly common problem but nevertheless, I will post my story in the hope that someone out there can help.

I have just purchased a brand new iphone 3GS (32Gb) which is unlocked, jailbroken and running OS 3.01. The iphone itself works like a dream. The problems started this week when I invested in the Apple AV composite cable and the Apple Universal Dock.

Basically, with the iphone docked and with the AV cable plugged in the back of the dock the following occurred:

1. The iphone would play around 10 seconds of music and stop. If I pressed the play button on the iphone screen, I would get another 10 seconds of music then it would stop again etc etc etc.

2. If I removed the AV cable and just used a simple headphone connection in the back of the dock, music plays just fine without interruption.

3. If I attempt to play video from the iphone with the AV cable connected to the back of the dock, all I hear is sound. No video at all.

4. If I plug the AV cable directly into the connector on the iphone without using the dock, nothing happens. No sound, no video, no music. Nothing.

I took the cable and the dock back to the Apple store and got it replaced with a brand new cable and dock. Exactly the same thing happens with the new equipment which means it must be a problem on the iphone itself.

Interestingly enough, when I was in the Apple shop I connected my iphone to three of their docks. Two Logic3 docks and a Bowers

Does the iPhone 3Gs use A2DP for music? ...

I recently bought the Sony DRBT100 headset (which so far I really like) and started reading about how it worked and got a little confused (my normal state).

Apparently, blutooth technology works in two ways with these combo phone/music players -- it can play stereo music using one protocol, and then act as a headset using another. Okay, so far so good, and it appears to both play music and act as a headset just fine.

But according to the docs, when it is music player mode (A2DP protocol, I assume) the volume cannot be controlled using the Sony magic volume button. This button only works for volume when the headset is using the headset mode (um, something like AHS?) And, it further states, you do NOT want to play music in this mode (which I am guessing is akin to listening to music over your telephone -- low fidelity and probably not stereo).

However, the Sony volume button DOES work on the iPhone 3Gs when playing music, which leads me to worrying that I'm not hearing music in the higher fidelity mode but rather in headset mode. There doesn't appear to be any way to switch modes on the iPhone itself (as my Sony manual says to do when listening to music) and I'm fairly sure Apple wouldn't make that mistake, but can someone assure me that A2DP protocol is being used when music is played?

iPhone Podcasts sorted correctly but ...

I have iTunes 9 and iPhone 3.1. I have read the discussion of people having trouble getting smart playlists of podcasts to sync in the same order as in iTunes. I am not having this problem. I have a smart playlist with podcasts in it and when I sync it with my iPhone and go to the playlist all the podcasts are appearing in the correct order. My problem is when I play them it plays them in a random order (as if shuffle is turned on). I can't see any option to turn shuffle off (if that is in fact what is causing this) or whether this is part of the same problem others are experiencing. I know in iPhone 3.0 when playing a podcast there was a little icon at the top near the 2x and repeat icon that enabled you to turn shuffle on and off but this doesn't appear for me anymore.

Play Count Issue ...

Hi,

I've had my iPhone 3GS now for almost 3 months, since buying it, it has never registered a song as played, not one single song has a play count against it. I don't understand why, I play my songs from start to finish, still nothing is counted. Even if I play the song through iTunes from my iPhone on my computer it will still not register the song as played

However if I play a song from my hard drive through iTunes it does register the play count.

Can any one please shed some light for me on what is causing this issue, cheers.

After updating iphone 3.1 OS the songs in my iphone are not shown. But when it is connected with PC in itunes 9 it shows still the songs have some space. But the music files are not visible in itunes 9.

Bluetooth Audio STILL HICCUPS after ...

Since people have been complaining about this from DAY 1 of 3.0... Why can't Apple fix the problem Bluetooth audio and the Microsoft Sync System in ALL FORD VEHICLES?? I realize it is made by Microsoft, but it is a lot easier to update the phone firmware than the car firmware. Other BT Audio devices can do it, WHY no the iPhone? Seriously Apple.... there are a lot of Fords out there!

i get a "this accessory is not made to work with iPhone" error message randomly throughout the day. sometimes only once an hour, other times its about once every 5 seconds. The thing is though, i have absolutely NOTHING attached to the iPhone, i'm not using any accessories. It asks me if i want to turn the phone onto airplane mode to reduce audio interference ... but even when the phone is in airplane mode the same error message occurs. And it is also affecting the audio as i cannot play ipod music out of the iphone speakers, ringtones and everything else still works, just not ipod music. no sound comes out and the volume control disappears completely. Has anyone else had similar problems? How did you fix it?

iPod song switching problem ...

When I use my iPod within iPhone 3G and listen in the shuffle mode, if I have the iPod in my pocket as I walk, the songs switch by themselves after 30-60 seconds. I assume that this has to do with the unit somehow being jiggled while I walk, but I don't understand why this should happen. I tried tried various headphones and this happens with them all. This does not happen when the unit is in my car or in other situations when the unit is not moving. How do I fix this?

I tend to listen to an artist's entire collectiong rather than specific albums. However I'm having a problem with songs that feature another artist. For instance if I select Jay Z and then all songs it will omit all the songs that are listed as Jay Z feat xxxxx. Is there anyway to have it so it plays all his songs, regardless of whether or not anyone else features without going through manually and changing it so the featured artist apears in the track title rather than artist? Hope I've explained that clearly enough.

Smart lists bugged since FW 3.1 ...

Hello.

I have noticed that the smart playlists are buged since the last update. All songs are synced, but when browsing through the playlist, the list is not correct.

For example, I have a playlist with the 500 last added songs. The playlist in iTunes is correct, all songs from this playlist are loaded in the iPhone (through the album list) but when looking at the playlist in the iPhone, the songs listed are not the last added.

Does anybody have noticed this issue ?

Syncing my iPhone music onto new ...

My old iMac G5 died and so with it my music that I used to sync with my iPhone. Now, I have a replacement iMac G5 (20 inch) and I want to sync to. However, it appears it will not offload the music off my iPhone. I also have some music that I was able to archive but none of the music I bought through my iPhone. It says ( can't remember verbatim) that if you sync you will lose what is on the device. I may have to check that one to make sure. What do I have to do to get my music off without losing it. Can someone give me some advise on what to do? Thanks

iPhone equalizer does not make a ...

I set EQ presets to all my songs in iTunes. When I change the EQ settings on my iPhone (3.1) while listening to a song, it does not make any difference to the sound, regardless of the preset I choose.

Any clues or suggestions? What is the difference between off and flat?

Original iPhone in original Universal ...

Hey there,

I've got an original iPhone and the original Universal Dock (the one with an S-Video outlet and no remote). I was hoping I could use it to hook up the iPhone to a stereo, using the dock's Line Out. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work. iPods play fine through the dock's Line Out, just the iPhone doesn't. The iPhone does, however, play fine through the Line Out of the dock it came in (unfortunately that only holds iPhones and not other iPods which is why it's not an option for the stereo arrangement).

Is there a way to make the iPhone play through the dock's Line Out?

Reformatted harddrive and now iPhone ...

I recently reformatted my harddrive because Windows vista was acting so horribly (I know, I know, I am saving up for a Mac). Now, my iPhone won't sync to my computer because, it says, the iPhone is already synced to another computer. I understand you can only sync to one computer at a time and I understand the iPhone believes that it's master is some other computer (my computer before I reformatted) but is there any way around completely erasing my iPhone?

I upgraded to 3.1 on my 3G S on friday. Within a day, all my music and videos were gone. After I upgraded, they were still on there. What could have happened? I haven't plugged into the computer since I upgraded.

Album Art on iPhone 3.0.1 duplicates ...

I'm getting a compilation CD (Triple J top 100 '08) showing up on my iPhone fine, except that when I tilt sideways to browse album covers, I get that album more than once. I get it 9 times, spread out to 9 different artists. Considering there are 60 artists on the CD set, I'm kind of confused. Tapping the album (under any of the 9 artists) brings up the songlist, and at the top it says MGMT (One of the artists on the disc who doesn't have an album cover) is the artist for the whole album. I've tried turning "Compilation CD" to both on and off, but nothing helps.

Syncing video with iPhoto ...

In iTunes 9 you can now sync videos from iPhoto onto your iPhone. However, I came up with the error saying that the .mov format was not supported by my phone. Should this happen? The iPhone page says that it supports these files yet it doesn't. The movies are 'HD' (1280 x 720) so maybe that's the problem?

Volume slider problem on the iPhone 3GS ...

First let me say sorry for my weak english writing.
So my problem is that i have a iphone 3GS with a very strange problem.
There is a game in the app Store called sentinel 2 its a tower defence game.
After i have installed and played the game i mentioned when i close it, that the volume slider in the ipod mode dont react right it cant be adjust right. if you pulled to the right it goes left and vice verca. I have addet a link with a video on you tube with somebody having the exact same problem. The apple shop gave me a new phone but the new phone shows the same behaviour.
Does anybody else have the same problem.
Is this a bug or a faulty iphone again?

how to upload new songs while not ...

i have an iPhone 3G and have had it for a little while now. I used to have a pc and uploaded songs from my pc to my iPhone. Now i changed from that PC to a laptop and just downloaded a new iTunes because i want to add some new songs. iTunes asks to synchronise my iPhone, which means (as far as i know) delete all the songs already on the iPhone and put the ones on the iPhone which you have in iTunes. I do want to keep the songs i already have on my iPhone but i also want new songs!! Any ideas of how i can put new songs from my laptop to my iPhone without synchronising????????!!!

help would be appreciated since it's kind of starting to annoy me now..

Organising Compilations album ...

Hi there, I've had a quick browse through and couldn't see any other topics that fit my question so I was hoping someone could helpI know you guys are the best for answering questions!

The problem I have is that I've organised all my compilations on my Macbook in iTunes using the sort artist as various artist so that they all appear together and under one album art on coverflow.

The problem occurs when I transfer them over to my iPhone. When I look through my list I can not find the artist contained within the compilation as stand alone artists, also when looking at an artist that I have that has an ordinary album and has a song in a compilation, it shows their individual album as well as all compilations album labelled by art artist as various, thus meaning I can not listen to all songs by that artist

If anyone knows of a way to organise music so that in coverflow it is organised so that compilations stay together and on the iPhone they are organised by artist ( so all songs appear that would be much appreciated.

I have group compilations turned on in prefs and I automatically sync my iPhone (so can't alter the files on the iPhone.

OS3.1 ignores the 'Album Artist' again? ...

After upgrading to OS3.1, iPhone 3G re-started to ignore the 'Album Artist' tag.

If I remember correctly, the tag had been ignroed in OS2.x, but the OS3.0 started to recognize it. The bug has come back with OS3.1? Or my memory is wrong?

Just in case you are not familiar with the problem, here is a summary:

Suppose I have an album by artist "artistA", in which a few songs have guest artists "artistB", "artistC". Of course this is not a compilation. I set the 'Album Artist' tag to "artistA", and set the 'Artist' tag of the songs to "artistA", "artistA feat. artistB", etc. If I transfer the album to my iPhone, then the artist list on the iPhone looks like:
"artistA"
"artistA feat. artistB"
"artistA feat. artistC"
I want only "artistA" is displayed (and it was indeed so with OS3.0, if I remember correctly). Moreover, if I select "artistA" on the iPhone, then only songs without guests are listed.

The following post may be related with my problem?
iTunes 9 or iPhone OS 3.1 has broken Artist labels.

Can I play videos only from the iPod function, or is there a way to play them from the "Photos" app ?.

I want to have folders in my "Photos" app that contain both pictures and videos, or do I have to go into iPod just to play the videos ?

If so, can I have the videos in playlists, like the music. Presently all my videos, musicvideos and other stuff are all in the same folder and mixed up, sorted alphabetically rather than by type.

Shuffling and Album Artwork ...

Since the update to 3.0.1, there's been very strange issues with album artwork on my iPhone, coupled with the inability to play music without it being shuffled/repeating. Many of my songs, especially more recent additions, are displaying artwork from other albums, even though they display correctly in iTunes. Some of the images are even composed of 4 album covers in a 2x2 square, and none of them are the right one. Along with that, when listening to an album, though I may click on the first song with the desire to play the album straight through, the iPhone shuffles the songs - every time. It also repeats the album/playlist that I'm listening to, which it never used to do in the past.

Is this occurring to anyone else? Any suggestions? Much appreciated.

Coverflow issues ...

Since I upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1 my coverflow has been hosed. At first, most cover art was missing or wrong and the center art (the selected album) was always blank. I cleared all the music off the iphone, create a new playlist and loaded that onto the iPhone. That corrected the art problems.

However, now when I'm in coverflow, the albums are sorted by artist instead of by album, and many of the artists are now listed as "Various Artists" even though the correct entries are present in iTunes on the computer.

For a long time I didn't know how to use the on-the-go list, so I deleted it from itunes. Now that I've learned how to use it, geez, my Playlists is empty on the iphone, there is no On-The-Go list at all!!

Purchased music/video on iphone ...

I purchase an album on my iphone using itunes, this album included music and music videos. The videos were on the iphone yesterday. I connected the iphone to my computer to transfer the purchases, it transfered the music but not the music video's, plus it deleted all the music video's from the phone!

iPhone3Gs does not like smart playlists ...

A very strange behavior has come up since updating to iTunes9 and iPhoneOs 3.1. iTunes syncs all the music that is listed in my 7 smart playlists to the iPhone. Unfortunately the iPhone has its very own way of handling these lists. It uses the names and offers a totally different program: a wild mixture of titles which do not really seem to follow a pattern (ok , one list is somehow in alphabetical order, the other six seem totally "genius" ).
I checked my computer with an iPhone 2G/3.0 and and iPod touch 3.1.1. This mentioned creativity is a 3Gs only feature.
And, ordinary playlists show the correct titles.

Any ideas?

OS 3.1 Breaks Car Interface ...

My 2009 Maxima has a dock connector for the iPhone that displays and controls the iPhone/iPod via the Nav screen and steering wheel controls. OS 3.1 broke that interface. Now, while the iPhone plays via the dock connector, none of the interface functions work nor does the iPhone appear as an audio source.

iPod Album sorting also sorts by ...

So I recently discovered that when I click on iPod on my iPhone and choose to sort by Album it does so but it also sorts that Album by Artist. Is there anyway I can ignore that? This is kind of a problem because I do have several albums on here that may be featuring guest artists or perhaps it's a compilation album of various artists.

Podcasts scrolling slowly ...

There seems to be a bug in the new 3.1 firmware. Go to your podcast list and flick through it. It no longer scrolls smoothly, but instead lags and moves in fits and starts.

Genius Mixes do not play and crash ipod ...

When I try and play a genius mix on my iphone 3g the screens moves to where the album art should be displayed and at the top it says Unknown for album, artist and song. Ipod crashes after a few seconds. Any ideas?

Also, I have many albums where the artwork is not transfering to the iphone, any ideas on that?

I cannot find this scrubber bar anywhere while using the ipod in my iphone 3G S.

I've tapped all over the "now playing" screen.

re: m4b file playing with no AUDIO ...

My school lectures are posted online, I used to be able to download the .m4b files and play them on my iphone.

The files play perfectly in itunes and quicktime. When I transfer them to my iphone and play them, the picture of the powerpoint slide comes up fine but the corresponding audio is not there. I tried messing with all the settings and I cannot come up with a solution.

"no content" shown in iPod app ...

I've had my iPhone 3G for over a year now and have never seen this problem, but recently after disconnecting my iPhone from the PC (having properly clicked the eject button), when I start the iPod app it says "no content", and "you can download music from itunes", and all my tracks are gone. To fix it I just re-dock it, let it do it's auto sync, which doesn't actually copy anything over, and re-eject it. Sometimes I need to repeat the re-docking procedure more than once, but it seems to work most of the time.

So, is anyone else seeing this? Is there any more persistent fix? It's quite annoying because ususally I don't realize the problem occurred until I've left my house.
