non apple headphone ...

I just bought an iPhone 3GS-32GB. The supplied headphone works ok, but the earbuds do not fit my ears and slip out easily.

Can I substitute it with any other standard audio headphones(such as the usual Sony, Panasonic, etc.) to listen to music, knowing that I would lose the sound volume/microphone control gizmo that comes with the apple headphone?

Using these standard headphones will not damage the "original soung system", and later on if I want to use the Apple supplied headphone again, I can get back to use the sound volume/ microphone control for phoning and music without any problems?
